“In 1996,a committee of practitioners and others involved with drug court program operations was established under the leadership of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP). Thecommittee was authorized to identify the critical elements of drug court programs to serve as the foundation for later drug court program development. Asa result of the committee’s efforts—Defining Drug Courts:The Key Components— was published by the Drug Courts Program Office (now part of the Bureau of Justice Assistance [BJA]) in 1997 and has served as the framework for drug court development and operational activities in state courts. This document focused primarily on the development of adult drug court programs.”
